January Cake

For January I made two MP3 player mini cakes. I made a yellow cake with chocolate icing to give it some flavor. I baked the cakes in half sheet pans so I could cut out the rectangles. After the rectangles were cut out I stacked them and then carved the so they had rounded edges. Once the cake was frosted I covered them with fondant. Then I painted them. One of them was blue and the other was green. I was supposed to add the little control buttons onto each of the cakes, but I was really frustrated with the gum-paste.  I could not get the shapes to look right. I finally gave up on the controls and left the MP3s as they were. I was very disappointed with the outcome of the cakes, but they were one of the more difficult cakes.

Barbie Cake Part 1

My history teacher asked me about a month ago if I would make her daughter's birthday cake. I said yes, of course, and today I made the practice cake. Mrs. Morin, my history teacher, wanted me to make a Barbie cake for her daughter, but I had never made one before so I wanted to practice. I baked a chocolate cake with Buttercream icing. My problems surprisingly started with the cake. I had to bake the cake in a Pampered Chef measuring cup. To create a hole for the Barbie to fit in I had to put a metal cylinder inside. About 10 minutes into the baking process we noticed that the metal cylinder was rising out of the cake. To solve the problem we quickly pushed it down and put rocks in it. The cake also took a long time to bake. This was because the cook book that I used had the incorrect measurements on the liquid. I ended up putting almost twice as much liquid as needed.Once I got the baking done the decorating ran smoothly. The only problem I had was that when I put the fondant on the cake it didn't cover a section of the back. I patched it up, but it was a noticeable difference. I solved the problem by making that section a "lace inlay." The dress was inspired by southern belles. I put little roses on it and finished it with luster dust all over so it sparkled. Overall I am happy with this cake. I hope that when I make the cake for the actual party it will be even better!
